Tempest was born on October 14th, 2005. We were a bit concerned about
this birth because Tempest's dam, Summer, lost a foal shortly after it
was born last year. Thankfully, everything seems just fine this time,
and we look forward to watching this baby grow and learn "the business".
There are many rather large photos on this page. Please
be patient, they may take a while to load completely.
All of Summer's babies have had "primitive" markings just as Tempest shows in some of
these photos. We are not entirely certain what genetic combination causes these markings.
From our research we have learned that characteristics such as a dorsal stripe, leg barring,
shoulder stripe, dark face mask, etc. are caused by the "dun factor". However, most "true"
duns are marked much more clearly than any of Summer's offspring have been. Perhaps there
is another genetic factor that causes similar markings, or maybe some other factor is muting
the effects of the dun. None of the stallions who have sired Summer's babies have shown any
hint of dun markings, so we are fairly certain that Summer is passing them on, even though her
markings are less visible than on any of her babies. Perhaps one day we will find out for sure!
