| She was four years old when I met her on a farm full of animals of all kinds, where her only name was "Pony" and her purpose was unknown. I saw her coat of yellow-gold with cornsilk mane and tail, her head held high, her shining eyes said, "Sunny is my name." There was no doubt her home was with me; she would gladden many children's hearts. With her wide-eyed innocent curiosity and tail-flipping mischief, she brought carefree happiness and joy with her. When my senseless human requests interrupted her grazing, she'd show her "frustration" with a stamp of hoof and vigorous head tossing, then cheerfully proceed to do perfectly whatever I had asked of her, never another complaint. She could be elegant in her harness, pulling a white cart, or cute and cuddly at a party in her winter fuzz, flowers and ribbons fluttering in her mane and tail. |

| She helped me choose an Arabian stallion to be the sire of her child, but when the time came to leave she was stricken, "Why must I go!?" said her eyes and her cries. In the brief time she was able to be with her baby, she was the best mom a filly could ask for: nurturing, encouraging, teaching. She was taken from us while protecting her child from an intruder in the pasture. The rattlesnake struck her in the throat, leaving venom to destroy her. I watched her cooperate with the veterinarian's efforts, and battle vigorously for life. On the fourth day she came to me, weary but calm, chose her place in the grass, and we said our good-byes. The doctor had tears, but none greater than mine, as I watched her eyes dim, no longer to shine. I kept her last horseshoes and braids from her hair, but most of all, best of all, her daughter is mine. "JCS Summer Storm" is her registered name, but to me she's just "Summer", to her it's all the same. To her I am "mother", she's now ten years old, and has had four girls of her own. In Summer and her children, I can see my dear Sunny. My first little pony lives on in my heart. |
